Letter from the Founder: The Story So Far

Catherine McAtier, Founder of What If Paisley Ltd

Hello,

I'm Catherine McAtier the Founder or What If Paisley Ltd.

I wanted to take a moment to share the story of WHAT IF—how it came to be, the winding road we’ve travelled, and where we’re headed next.

The Dream Begins

Founded in 2020, WHAT IF Paisley Ltd was my Creative Dream—born from a desire to build a space where handmade work, community connection, and creative freedom could thrive.

The name was inspired by Rob Hopkins’ book From What Is to What If—a call to imagine better futures and take steps toward making them real.

I left my corporate life behind, full of hope and excitement, and opened the doors to WHAT IF just as the world was slowing down. The timing might’ve seemed strange, but it gave me a few precious months to decorate the space and let the dream breathe.

People were craving connection, creativity, and local community—and I was sure WHAT IF could be part of that.

What If Imagined

A Hub Full of Heart

We started small—selling handcrafted work by local makers and hosting embroidery and textile workshops. I was in the zone, loving what I was building. But life, as it often does, had other plans.

In May 2022, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. It came during a time of personal isolation and uncertainty, just after I’d managed to avoid COVID for two years. Treatment began quickly—chemo, immunotherapy, surgery, and eventually radiotherapy.

There were good days and hard days. Through it all, I was held up by the incredible support of family, friends, and the extended WHAT IF community. I’ll never forget that. WHAT IF would not have made it without you.

By Christmas that year, I was cancer free. Exhausted, yes—but grateful. And more convinced than ever of the power and purpose behind this little creative space.

Then Came Another Blow

Catherine's mum

Just as I was getting back on my feet, my mum fell ill. She was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and family became the centre of everything. “Family First” became one of my non-negotiables—and still is. I wouldn’t trade those precious, difficult months for anything.

My mum made it to Portugal to see her youngest granddaughter get married. That was her mission—and she made it happen. Fierce, funny, and full of love. Her legacy remains deeply woven into WHAT IF.

The Universe Had More in Store

In December 2023, I noticed a mole on my leg that didn’t look quite right. Before I knew it, I was back in hospital, having it removed. By March 2024, after another surgery and a hospital stay for diverticular colitis, I was finally given the all clear. Cancer-free. No further treatment needed.

This time, I got the message loud and clear: Life is precious. Slow down. Pay attention. Support your people. Celebrate the small stuff.

A New Chapter for WHAT IF

In May 2025, I turned 60.

I may be older, but I’m clearer than ever on what I want WHAT IF to be. We’re refreshing the shop—inside and out. We want it to reflect the care, creativity, and beauty within. We’ll be telling more of our makers’ stories, and showcasing the love and talent behind their creations.

I’m also dreaming again about the outside space—creating a true creative hub with little studios, a dye garden, and a space where makers can thrive.

We’ve faced a lot over the past five years:

  • Cancer and recovery (twice!)

  • Heartbreak and healing

  • Break-ins, fires, kids on the roof (and one with a bike!)

  • A full house move with barely any notice

And through it all: the unwavering belief in the creative spark, the strength of community, and the power of getting back up.

Still Asking “What If?” (And Now, “Why Not?”)

This is a new chapter for WHAT IF. And if you’ve supported us in any way—by visiting the shop, buying handmade, attending a workshop, or cheering us on—thank you. Your support has meant the world.

And if you’re just discovering us: welcome. Come be part of the story.

With gratitude and creativity,
